John Monash Science School - Customer Case Study

Monash University and the John Monash Science School (JMSS) partnered to give senior secondary students high-quality science education beyond the classroom. Located on Monash’s Clayton campus, JMSS was created to boost participation in science and maths, but faced the challenge of extending its specialist teaching to regional and remote students who lack access to emerging-science programs. Educators needed a way to engage 15–16-year-olds in real time with video and interactive learning so students could build relationships with teachers and peers.

They launched the National Virtual School of Emerging Sciences (NVSES) using Cisco WebEx to deliver cloud-based, interactive classrooms from a custom JMSS studio with team teaching and guest experts. The WebEx solution let students share video, work in groups and ask questions live; by December 2014 NVSES had reached more than 35 schools and 460 students, received strongly positive student feedback, and turned into the expanded Emerging Sciences Victoria program — oversubscribed with 388 expressions of interest for about 250 semester places — demonstrating a scalable, engaging model for connected learning.
