Preview of the CALSTAR Case Study

CALSTAR builds an air-to-ground dispatch system that connects air transport to lifesaving care

California Shock Trauma Air Rescue (CALSTAR) is a nonprofit regional air ambulance that transports critically ill and injured patients across California and northern Nevada. After the FAA updated operational control guidance in 2009, CALSTAR needed to bring air-to-ground dispatch in-house and deliver always-available, easy-to-use communications linking its Communications Center (CALCOM), flight crews, first responders, and hospitals so teams could focus on patient care, not technology.

Built on CALSTAR’s existing Cisco switching and unified communications platform, the solution deployed Cisco Unified Enterprise Attendant Console, Cisco Instant Connect, and Unified Communications Manager to provide a single desktop for dispatch, radio interoperability, and layered network resiliency. The outcome was significantly increased uptime, faster lift times, simpler and more accurate communications with higher situational awareness and operational control, plus new capabilities such as a centralized transfer center and expanded remote collaboration and training.
