Supporting Infection Prevention Data Collection and Communication with CipherHealth’s Orchid Application

St. Joseph's Medical Center faced rising risk from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and aimed to reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) by improving adherence to preventive care bundles. After initial paper-based audits and a hands-on bedside rounding program, the hospital adopted CipherHealth’s Orchid application in August 2015 to streamline data collection, communication, and monitoring.

CipherHealth implemented Orchid as a tablet/smartphone tool with pre-programmed alerts, immediate email notifications to unit managers, and automated, color-coded reporting to support real-time feedback and targeted bedside education. With CipherHealth’s support, St. Joseph's Medical Center increased CAUTI compliance by 60% and CLABSI compliance by 58%, sustained greater than 90% compliance for both bundles since August 2015, and achieved a 67% reduction in CAUTI in the second four months of 2015 compared with the first four months; the program was later expanded to monitor falls and pressure ulcers.
