Helping ODOT Move Data into Information

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) manages the state’s vast transportation systems and the massive data those systems produce, but its computing environment—central mainframes, 300 CADD systems and over 1,500 PCs—made it difficult to turn data into actionable information. Facing the goal of “better information, not just more data,” ODOT needed to integrate disparate platforms and improve decision-making, payment processing and materials testing workflows across headquarters and 12 districts.

ODOT adopted Cincom’s SUPRA Server and client/server tools, first piloting a fleet auction app and then building a 300‑table Construction Management System with Construction Administration and Testing Administration modules running on Windows clients. The SUPRA-based solution integrated non‑SQL and SQL applications, was quick to deploy (pilot in about two months), and delivered measurable benefits: contractor payment cycles were cut by more than half—sometimes to 2–3 days—management reporting and document flow improved dramatically, and the system supports 300 concurrent users while enabling future distributed data and additional applications.
