A CGI Case Study
EDP Renewables (EDPR), a world leader in the renewable energy sector, faced significant challenges in controlling its rapidly expanding global portfolio of wind farms following a major acquisition. They needed a single, integrated system to manage thousands of turbines from different manufacturers in real time across various countries, while also maintaining grid stability and achieving operational excellence. CGI partnered with EDPR to address this complex challenge.
CGI implemented its Wind Energy Management System (WEMS), based on its Renewables Management System (RMS), which provided real-time control of over 6,000 turbines across nearly 300 farms on three continents. The solution enabled EDPR to remotely maximize energy output, benchmark turbine performance, reduce operational costs, and comply with international regulations. This led to increased energy revenues and helped countries like Portugal and Spain achieve up to 50% renewable energy penetration in their total electricity consumption.
