Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment cuts rush-hour traffic with CGI's SmartTravel platform

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment faced the challenge of reducing traffic congestion and improving travel sustainability across its densely populated country without building new infrastructure. To meet this, they launched the nationwide Beter Benutten program and engaged CGI as a sub-contractor to implement its digital SmartTravel solution as part of this initiative.

CGI's solution utilized its Smart Trip Analytics Platform, which leverages smartphone GPS and algorithms to analyze trips, detect transport modes with 97.5% accuracy, and gamify better travel choices with rewards. This approach successfully motivated driver behavior modification. Intermediate metrics indicated that the three initial regions using the solution were on track to achieve their 2017 targets of a 10% improvement in door-to-door travel time during rush hour.
