Canadian Public Transportation Agency plans safe ridership recovery after 95% ridership drop with CGI

A large Canadian public transportation agency faced a dramatic 95% drop in ridership and needed to plan for a safe recovery while complying with physical distancing requirements. They partnered with CGI to address challenges around managing new passenger flows, determining maximum capacities, and maintaining a high-quality passenger experience.

CGI implemented a proof of concept using crowd simulation software to model pedestrian flows and behaviors in a key rail station corridor. The resulting 2D and 3D visualization models helped the agency plan various scenarios for crowd management and train schedules. Due to the success of the POC, CGI is expanding the simulation modelling to additional areas, providing an effective way for the agency to safely resume its day-to-day operations.
