IBM’s Watson team, supported by the Market Development and Insights (MD&I) group, needed to map the fast-moving, crowded world of AI startups beyond the well-known vendors. Their challenge was to identify and evaluate the long tail of emerging companies, discern differentiators and traction, and manage a large, collaborative research effort across business units.
They used the CB Insights platform—leveraging its industry/technology taxonomy, Mosaic scores, Company and Deal Search, and Collections—to identify thousands of AI companies and analyze VC funding and deal activity. The team built a dynamic, shareable Collection with ongoing algorithmic alerts, enabling clear market segmentation, actionable insights for Watson and IBM, and a durable resource that avoids repeating the initial research.
