A CARTO Case Study

Preview of the Telefonica Case Study

Driving value for Smart Cities with IoT and Location Intelligence solutions

Telefónica, a global telecom serving more than 346 million customers across 17 countries, sought to turn IoT and city data into actionable insights for public-sector clients. The Smart Cities and IoT team needed a FIWARE-compliant dashboard to ingest and analyze real-time feeds from thousands of sensors across verticals such as parking, street lighting, waste, environment and transportation, and present visualizations and role-based access for both citizens and city administrators.

Using CARTO, Telefónica built Urbo: a real-time Smart Cities dashboard with public and private portals and machine-learning route optimization for waste collection. The platform visualized data from 1,000+ sensors, cut waste-management fuel and labor costs by 7%, helped identify lighting as 30% of city power use and save €1.2M/year by adjusting schedules and dimming across 70% of street lights, and enabled better KPI-driven decisions for more efficient, sustainable cities.
