A Capita Case Study

Preview of the East Renfrewshire Council Case Study

Using smart technology to monitor CO2 in East Renfrewshire schools

East Renfrewshire Council worked with Capita to address new Scottish Government guidance on monitoring air quality in teaching areas, aiming to create safer school environments while avoiding the burden of manual checks across every room. The Council needed a scalable way to gather CO2 and other environmental data in schools as part of its wider digital ambitions.

Capita implemented a pilot and then rapidly scaled the project, deploying IoT gateways and NDIR sensors in every high school, primary school, and pre-5 classroom, with data displayed in digital dashboards. The result was real-time monitoring of CO2, temperature, and humidity across the estate, including 16.5k data messages in the first two days, giving East Renfrewshire Council actionable insights to prioritize remediation, use resources more effectively, and support its climate change goals.
