UNISON, one of the UK's largest public sector trade unions, faced a significant strategic challenge in overcoming fragmentation and isolation across its 1.3 million members and 1,200 geographically dispersed branches. The union needed an innovative platform to connect its army of activists and staff for learning, knowledge sharing, and organizing. Partnering with vendor Capita (via their Brightwave unit), UNISON implemented the tessello total learning system, which it branded as 'Organising Space'.

The solution provided a dynamic online community that empowered activists to connect, share best practices, and complete structured learning pathways. The results were highly successful, with 700 initial sign-ups at launch and growth to 1,300 active learners and 10,000 completed learning resources within a year. Capita's tessello platform was hailed by UNISON's leadership as "cutting edge trade unionism" and a tremendous asset that provided real value to the union's mission.
