How we made cost savings with a budget deficit

ScotRail faced a significant budget deficit and needed to find short-term cost savings across third-party spend and procurement. It turned to Capita for support, including a diagnostic of spend and procurement capability, as well as help with sourcing and contract management.

Capita consolidated data from four systems, analyzed £454m of spend, and identified savings opportunities, process improvements, and compliance gaps. The work delivered £3.88m in savings and £0.42m in cost avoidance in 2018, with further opportunities valued at up to £1.89m, plus a £1m compensation under-recovery and a £2.4m gap identified in Ayr station-related costs.
