Apptio Eliminates Testing Bottleneck to Scale with Rapid Customer Growth

Apptio, a tech business management software provider used by more than 1,000 customers (including half of the Fortune 100), faced a growing testing bottleneck as it expanded internationally. Its in‑house server farm (Linux/Firefox) struggled to keep browser versions up to date—adding Chrome and other browsers required server approvals and manual installs that could delay testing by a week—so Apptio needed a scalable, stable cross‑browser testing infrastructure.

Apptio implemented BrowserStack (Automate and Live), integrating it with TeamCity via Local and using JUnit to specify browsers programmatically, which let them scale automated tests across Chrome, IE, Edge (including Edge Insider), and Firefox and enable developers to run browser tests directly from their IDEs. With BrowserStack they reduced build times, sped deployment, improved visibility into build quality, ran suites across 5–10 browsers in parallel, eliminated VM/browser setup, and within a year made automation accessible across multiple teams—delivering measurable faster builds and better release confidence.
