Tim Hortons Uses In-App Messaging to Gamify Their App in Record Time

Tim Hortons needed to rapidly launch a gamified NHL playoff promotion in its mobile app when the 2020 playoffs were unexpectedly rescheduled for August. To meet the tight deadline, Tim Hortons worked with Braze and used Braze’s In-App & In-Browser Messaging (in-app messages) to deliver a promotional tie‑in without requiring users to sign into a separate experience.

Braze implemented an in-app messaging overlay that mimicked the app UI so the game ran seamlessly inside the app; with just one front-end designer, one engineer, and under five dedicated people overall, the promotion was designed and built in 3–4 days and launched in about one month. The result was a live NHL Hockey Challenge that drove rapid in-app engagement and produced a reusable template for future promotions—achieved in record time with Braze.
