La Presse, one of Canada’s most popular free French‑language news sources, wanted to increase its subscriber base while keeping content free and accessible. To do this it partnered with Braze, using Braze-powered custom in-browser messages and the Braze SDK to prompt readers to create free accounts without obscuring articles.
Working with Braze, La Presse implemented a non‑blocking, lower‑screen “reader wall” built with custom HTML/CSS and local browser storage that shows a countdown of remaining guest articles and then blocks content when limits are reached. The Braze-enabled solution drove a 43% conversion rate and added 139,000 new subscribers in the first month, while improving ad targeting and enabling campaign management without additional developer resources.
