Bradford Networks and Airwatch Provide Secure BYOD at University of California, Irvine Medical Center

University of California, Irvine Medical Center, a leading academic hospital, faced a surge in personal mobile device use as clinicians and students sought to access its EMR via a new Allscripts app. The challenge was to enable secure BYOD access without disrupting care: UC Irvine needed full endpoint visibility, automated role-based access controls, and HIPAA-compliant protections that wouldn’t burden users or IT.

UC Irvine deployed Bradford Networks’ Network Sentry integrated with AirWatch MDM so devices must be provisioned via the AirWatch app, checked for required patches/antivirus, and tied to user profiles before access. The solution gives real-time device identification and quarantine, automated provisioning by role, remote wipe capabilities, and audit trails for compliance. Results included automatic blocking of unsafe devices, simplified access management, a 30% drop in help-desk calls, and fast, provable HIPAA compliance.
