Atrius Health Uses Network Access Control to Identify And Close Security Gaps

Atrius Health, a nonprofit ambulatory care organization with 36 locations, more than 10,000 staff and 900 physicians serving over 740,000 patients, faced a critical security and operational challenge: inadequate physical network access controls and limited visibility allowed unauthorized devices to connect, risking data loss, HIPAA non‑compliance and duplicated equipment purchases across distributed sites.

Atrius deployed Fortinet’s NAC (FortiNAC), using persistent agents and device profiling to lock the network to authorized endpoints, alert on unregistered devices and quickly shut down individual ports. The solution uncovered and removed more than a dozen untracked devices (including unsecured wireless hubs and routers), improved centralized management, reduced unnecessary purchases, strengthened HIPAA compliance and enabled future integrations such as SIEM for automated threat response.
