Transforms Patient Experience and Eliminates 800,000 Paper Forms Annually with Electronic Signature and Data Capture

Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s largest private health system with more than 2,000 beds and 18,000 employees, needed to replace time-consuming paper registration and consent processes that made the patient experience feel outdated. Earlier attempts—reflective dual monitors and heavy bedside carts with bulky tablets—were costly, awkward for patients, and operationally inefficient. Sharp wanted a lightweight, secure, and accurate way to automate form selection, signature capture and data validation while improving workflow and meeting rising patient expectations.

Sharp implemented Bottomline’s eCapture (powered by Logical Ink), using mobile devices and barcode-scanning of patient armbands to pull the correct documents, capture legally binding signatures and import data directly into the EMR. The rollout grew to 700 users (about 400 daily), producing more than 2 million completed forms and images to date (over 800,000 in 2018), eliminated bulky hardware, saved roughly $46,000 on equipment refresh, reduced cart weight and related injury claims, improved data accuracy and patient satisfaction, and earned Sharp an internal innovation award.
