M&T Bank, a community-focused bank serving more than 3.6 million clients across several Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, set out to modernize its payments infrastructure to deliver faster funds availability, greater transparency and improved efficiency for commercial and business customers. That challenge became acute during the 2020 pandemic when the bank needed to process and fund Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans around the clock to get critical funds to businesses without the limitations of traditional Wire and ACH windows.
M&T implemented Real‑Time Payments via the RTP Network® with The Clearing House and integrated Bottomline’s Digital Banking IQ as a consolidated payments hub and API-enabled channel for commercial and business banking. The solution enabled instant deposits, richer payment messaging and 24/7 processing—helping M&T fund more than 35,000 PPP loans totaling over $7 billion in 2020, accelerate payroll and vendor payments, improve liquidity and cash visibility, and expand RTP services through its Treasury Center and BizPay offerings.
