Visiting Nurse Service of New York transforms its IBM DB2 environment for fast, reliable access to unstructured patient data

Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), which provides in-home care to more than 150,000 patients, needed fast, reliable access to a growing volume of patient data — including unstructured items like wound photos and recordings — while keeping IBM DB2 mainframe costs under control. Field staff use tablets and laptops to access the patient care record system (PCRS), so improving DB2 performance and availability was critical to delivering timely care.

VNSNY implemented BMC High Speed Utilities for DB2 with Next Generation Technology and BMC LOBMaster to automate DB2 maintenance, reorgs, and large-object (LOB) management. The changes delivered up to 15–25% faster data and image access, about 20% faster reorgs and maintenance runs, ensured LOB integrity, improved availability for more than 15,000 clinicians, and reduced MIPS consumption and storage costs.
