A SS&C Blue Prism Case Study
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, which provides maternity care to a population of 675,000, faced manual appointment and referral processes that left pregnant people waiting six to eight weeks for essential scans and visits — a delay that risked patient safety and diverted midwives from direct care. To meet NHS England’s Better Births goals, the Trust engaged SS&C Blue Prism and implemented SS&C Blue Prism digital workers and intelligent automation to streamline maternity bookings and referrals.
SS&C Blue Prism’s digital workers now propose and book follow-up appointments based on due dates, ensure bookings within 24–48 hours, send email and text reminders, and alert clinicians if a patient attends A&E. As a result, Portsmouth Hospitals increased maternity appointment capacity by 33%, returned 18,000 staff hours, reduced staffing costs by £225,000 per year, avoided £105,000 in outsourced scan costs, and minimized risk to mothers and babies while cutting “did not attend” rates.
