Port of Rotterdam Gets Smarter with Help from Intelligent Digital Workers

Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe handling roughly 30,000 ocean-going and 100,000 inland vessels a year, faced a major compliance and operational challenge when Dutch tax law required proof that 30,000 vessels spent 70% of their time outside territorial waters to qualify for a VAT exemption. To run error-free, 24/7 processes and meet strict security and audit requirements, the Port of Rotterdam enlisted SS&C Blue Prism and its intelligent digital workforce (digital workers) to help automate the workload.

SS&C Blue Prism deployed digital workers that use an AIS-based model developed by the port’s data scientists to calculate time outside territorial waters and determine VAT status, so employees only contact a small number of agents when needed. The SS&C Blue Prism solution now operates across seven departments and runs 36 processes, delivering increased efficiency, cost savings, improved accuracy and compliance, and freeing staff to focus on inspections and port maintenance while improving employee and customer satisfaction.
