University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust serves 350,000 people across northwest England and struggled with a huge outpatient backlog and frequent cancellations that left roughly 100,000 appointments waiting and required about 15 minutes per booking. To squeeze 20% more patients into full schedules and improve patient experience, the Trust turned to SS&C Blue Prism, deploying SS&C Blue Prism Cloud to optimize appointment scheduling.
The Trust’s automation team built a desktop app to text waiting patients and direct them to an online booking form; SS&C Blue Prism digital workers then capture requests, enter them into the patient administration system, and send confirmations, with only incomplete records escalated to staff. The SS&C Blue Prism solution cut booking time from 15 minutes to four, handles 1,200–1,300 appointments daily, returned 36,024 hours to the Trust in five months (nearly 30,000 to admin and 6,000+ to clinicians) and saved £546,588 in five months, while improving patient and employee experience.
