A SS&C Blue Prism Case Study
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is a large teaching hospital trust serving over half a million patients a year. UHB faced manual, time-consuming integration and data-quality challenges — including a backlog of ~50,000 deceased patient records (about six months’ work for an FTE) and 200–300 daily pharmacy stock updates (about one FTE) — plus multiple other manual transfers and integrations. To address these, UHB worked with SS&C Blue Prism, using its robotic process automation/self-service process automation technology to integrate self‑service kiosks and automate backend processes.
SS&C Blue Prism delivered automated processes that reconciled the Patient Master Index and updated pharmacy stock systems: the reconciliation solution was implemented in three days and completed the backlog within weeks, converting months of manual effort into automated minutes and dramatically cutting ongoing quarterly workload; pharmacy updates now run early each morning within minutes (avoiding a £60K vendor plugin) and recouped roughly one FTE. SS&C Blue Prism also trained UHB staff to build an internal Centre of Excellence, producing faster delivery, lower operating costs, improved “right‑first‑time” accuracy, and reduced pressure on IT.
