Hickies Ties Up Ecommerce Problems With New Reliable Platform

Hickies, the startup behind elastic, tie-free laces founded after a successful Kickstarter, outgrew its early ecommerce setups. After moving from self-hosted Joomla to Shopify, the team ran into limits on internationalization, restrictive payment processing and rising costs that slowed feature delivery and hindered global expansion.

Migrating to BigCommerce gave Hickies flexible integrations and multiple payment options (including Braintree and one-click Google Pay), a redesigned cart with more payment buttons, and faster multi-country rollouts. The switch drove strong results in the US (June–Dec 2019): a 215% increase in total online sales MoM, 275% increase in Google Pay sales MoM and an 804% increase in Google Pay orders MoM, while enabling expanded Google Shopping, multichannel advertising and improved retention.
