BigCommerce Helps Toolden Scale from Local Seller to Global Retailer

Toolden, a nearly 30-year-old seller of power tools, hand tools and accessories based in North East Scotland, needed a scalable ecommerce solution to move from local marketplaces to a global retail presence. After a custom website proved difficult to manage and limited growth—especially as the company expanded its catalog during the COVID-19 downturn—Toolden sought a more reliable, sustainable platform to support larger product assortments and international expansion.

Toolden chose BigCommerce over Shopify for its native functionality, price and strong API/ERP integrations, linking Google Shopping, Springbot, Trustpilot and a native Facebook connector, and working with BigCommerce partner Xtensive for the redesign. The switch helped Toolden grow its catalog from 10k to 30k SKUs and drove major growth: 94% increase in sales year-over-year (2019–2020), a 169.4% revenue jump in Jan 2021 YoY, 163% increases in orders and customers, and forecasts of continued strong growth in 2021.
