Buyagift Uses ‘Conversations’ To Deliver Dynamic Customer Service And Boost Conversion Rates By 171%

Buyagift, a London-based retailer founded in 1999 that sells experiential gifts (from skydiving to spa weekends), faced a key challenge: purchasers typically buy for someone else, so the company had no direct link to end users and struggled to capture authentic pre-purchase feedback—especially for date-specific experiences like Valentine’s or Christmas. Without reliable reviews, customers were hesitant to buy and Buyagift couldn’t measure how feedback affected sales or spot problems to fix.

In 2010 Buyagift implemented Bazaarvoice Conversations, using voucher registration to capture recipients’ emails and inviting them to review their experience about three weeks later, plus running Facebook preview promotions to generate reviews for future events. The program let Buyagift use authentic user language across marketing and product copy and drove strong results: conversion was 171% higher for visitors who interacted with reviews, average order value rose 10%, page views per session increased 200%, and time on site grew 15%—a model now rolling out to France, Italy and Spain.
