Travis Unified School District Keeps its Networks Secure and Running Smoothly with the Barracuda CloudGen Firewalls

Travis Unified School District, a Northern California K–12 district serving about 5,500 students across nine schools (including Travis Air Force Base communities), struggled with an aging port-based firewall that couldn’t stop peer-to-peer apps, unsanctioned streaming, anonymizers and VPNs. Those workarounds caused frequent slowdowns despite ample bandwidth, and daily troubleshooting was slow and CLI-heavy—often taking up to an hour to identify and remediate issues.

The district deployed two Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F900s in a high-availability cluster with Firewall and Application Control enabled, which blocked unsanctioned content, freed up misappropriated bandwidth and significantly improved performance. Administrators gained centralized, GUI-based management (no CLI), fast troubleshooting with Firewall History View, better traffic visibility and shaping, and resilient VPN access for staff—delivering a more secure, responsive and easier-to-manage network.
