Medical Information Protected by Barracuda NG Firewall

The Institute for Emergency Medicine and Medicine Management (INM) at Munich University Hospital—an interdisciplinary research and teaching center that handles large volumes of sensitive patient data and supports 30+ remote users—faced strict legal and technical security requirements. Its legacy packet-filter firewall could no longer protect against diverse attacks and malware, so INM needed an application-level security solution that also provided secure VPN access, high availability, and centralized management.

INM deployed the Barracuda NG Firewall and NG Control Center, creating a redundant, centrally managed network with multi‑gigabit performance, integrated bandwidth management, and robust VPN access. The phased rollout completed in three weeks with only minutes of downtime; since then the system has delivered stable, secure access to critical data, easier VPN customization, and simplified administration.
