Humanitas DMH Deploys Barracuda CloudGen Firewall on Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute to Enhance Security and Client Care Practices

Humanitas DMH is a Dutch healthcare organization that supports clients with intellectual disabilities and psychiatric problems, employing about 1,200 staff who serve 3,000 clients daily. The organization faced an outdated, largely outsourced on‑premises IT environment that couldn’t meet modern security, compliance and communication needs for highly sensitive client data, and it needed a scalable, future‑proof solution—despite being an early adopter of Azure ExpressRoute in the Netherlands.

Humanitas migrated most services to Microsoft Azure and a local Dutch cloud (Vancis) and deployed the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall over Azure ExpressRoute, with Barracuda providing training and engineering support. The new architecture halved the server estate, strengthened security and compliance, enabled cost savings and scalable pay‑as‑you‑go/BYOL options, improved provider–client communication, and positioned the organization to run the majority of workloads in the cloud.
