Herlev Gymnasium puts its trust in Barracuda NG Firewall to keep students safe while using mobile devices at school

Herlev Gymnasium, a secondary school in Denmark with 800 students and 250 staff, needed to modernize an outdated, complex network to support a BYOD learning environment. The existing setup—six local servers, external virtual servers, unsecured VLANs and a firewall that wouldn’t scale—left students exposed to unsafe web content and overwhelmed a two-person helpdesk, so the school prioritized simplifying administration, securing services (FTP/DHCP) and controlling bandwidth.

The school deployed the Barracuda NG Firewall (F400), using its integrated VLAN management, URL filtering, traffic shaping, DHCP/FTP and central management to enforce policies, protect users and profile traffic. The redesign cut local servers from six to two VMs, reduced monthly administration from 60 to 10 hours, stabilized bandwidth for mobile devices, and enabled a secure BYOD program while ensuring pupil safety online.
