A Barracuda Networks Case Study
Mechanicsburg Area School District, which serves 3,700 students and 600 staff across nine locations (4,300 users), was struggling with unreliable, slow Symantec tape backups for 30 Windows, six Linux and other servers and databases. Tape required costly agents, frequent maintenance and long restore times, so IT systems administrator Todd Ritter sought a subscription-based hardware backup solution that fit the District’s budget.
In 2006 the District deployed the Barracuda Backup Service 690, providing automatic local and offsite backups with block-level deduplication, scheduling and detailed reporting. Restores became fast and routine (including a full database server restore), tape cycling and offsite tape costs were eliminated, and backups became more reliable — saving time and reducing operational risk.
