A Bandwidth Case Study

Preview of the Pinger Case Study

Pinger Had a Novel Idea Have Every App Download Come With Its Own Phone Number

Pinger, the nation’s top free texting provider (over 50 million downloads and 15 billion texts), wanted to add voice to its market‑leading Textfree app and assign each user a unique phone number. As a software‑first company new to VoIP with no existing voice volume, Pinger needed an agile, experienced network partner — Bandwidth — to provide phone‑number provisioning and VoIP/communications API capabilities to launch and scale the service.

Bandwidth worked closely with Pinger to integrate voice calling and provision individual phone numbers in Textfree, delivering a rapid build and on‑time launch on December 21. The results were immediate and measurable: 2.5 million voice calls between December 21–30, a peak #2 ranking in Apple’s App Store, full utilization of every phone number Bandwidth delivered, stronger downloads than Weather.com and Pandora in January 2011, and Pinger projecting $200M in revenues in 2012.
