Swisscom - Customer Case Study

Swisscom Corporate Business faced a complex, firewall-heavy network of small interconnected sites and was running an expensive proprietary backup product that couldn’t deliver a centralized solution. They needed a way to share a single robotic tape library across many networks over a Fiber Channel backbone while handling tape-drive locking. Swisscom selected Bacula Systems and its Bacula Enterprise Edition, and Bacula Systems even developed a custom SAN Shared Storage plugin to meet the tape-sharing requirement.

Bacula Systems migrated Swisscom from Symantec NetBackup to Bacula Enterprise Edition, deploying a Director, 10 Storage Daemons, PostgreSQL catalog with warm-standby replication, two StorageTek SL500 tape libraries (Bern and Zurich) on a Cisco MDS9000 Fiber Channel fabric, NetApp spooling, Copy Jobs for geographic redundancy, Puppet for client configuration and Splunk for reporting. The deployment now backs up over 200 clients, about 250 GB/day incremental and 5 TB/month full, delivering clear cost savings and ROI versus the prior solution, greater scalability and flexibility, robust encryption support, and responsive vendor support from Bacula Systems.
