Dell Services Federal Government Saves $25,000 And Reduces A 4 TB Microsoft® SharePoint® Content Database By 88% With DocAve®

Dell Services Federal Government, a Dell subsidiary supporting defense, intelligence and civil agencies, relied heavily on Microsoft SharePoint for intranet, collaboration and task-order management across roughly 3,500 end-users. Its SQL Server content database ballooned to about 4 TB, making SQL maintenance difficult, slowing the system for users and forcing content-database backups to take more than six hours.

The company deployed AvePoint’s DocAve Storage Manager to externalize BLOBs (rules: non-SharePoint items >100 KB) to a file-server back end and run scheduled and real-time offloading. The content database shrank by ~3.5 TB (88%) to ~500 GB, full backups dropped to under one hour (≈83% faster), system performance improved with no user complaints, and Dell Services Federal Government saved about $25,000 in hardware costs.
