Updated Mobile Learning Environment Wins High Marks at City University

City University in London — serving about 17,000 students and 2,000 staff across 24 buildings — was struggling with a highly complex, BYOD-heavy network that experienced frequent outages and made routine changes risky and time-consuming. Peak loads of thousands of wired and wireless devices, plus mission‑critical services like Moodle and streamed lectures, magnified the problem and hurt user satisfaction.

City replaced its core with Avaya Fabric Connect (Shortest Path Bridging) and Avaya orchestration tools, turning two data centres into a virtual site and simplifying VLAN and device provisioning. The result: planned‑only downtime (100% reported core uptime), much faster deployments (26 switches configured in two hours), dozens more VLANs for traffic separation, easier server moves and administration — and a marked rise in student satisfaction.
