City of Martinsville Leverages Technology for Economic Development Initiative

The City of Martinsville used its municipal broadband and telecom team (MINet Solutions) to address a local business problem: poor service and stalled network upgrades from incumbent telephone providers. Telecommunications Director Mike Scaffidi sought a reliable, affordable, scalable phone offering that would help attract and retain businesses, reduce contract costs, and provide better customer support and redundancy.

Martinsville became a Municipal Local Exchange Company and, with RONCO’s help, deployed Avaya IP Office and moved backup services to Amazon Web Services for cloud redundancy. The feature-rich, easy-to-manage VoIP service quickly scaled from 20 to 185 business customers (supporting 2,000 users), generates over $2 million per year, maintains a waiting list, and delivers fast support and resilient failover.
