Rakuten, Japan’s largest online marketplace with more than 12,000 employees and nearly 90% of Japan’s internet population registered, needed to standardize its development processes as it expanded globally and added more remote workers. The company’s fragmented, team-by-team approach made knowledge sharing, cross-team communication, and consistent workflows difficult at scale.

Rakuten implemented Atlassian’s suite—Jira Software Data Center for project management, Confluence for documentation and collaboration, and Bitbucket for Git—plus integrations and reporting apps. The result: faster development cycles, stronger cross-team collaboration and transparency (commits now appear directly in Jira), widespread knowledge sharing via Confluence, and a shift toward more open, agile development and customer-facing status reporting.
