How San Diego County Uses AssetWorks to Keep its Fleet Operations Competitive, Cost Effective and Well Controlled

San Diego County — a 4,260‑square‑mile government serving about three million residents — manages a fleet of roughly 3,800 vehicles across eight service centers and 21 fueling sites. Facing a merger of two fleet operations, an outdated mainframe system, pressure to match private‑sector efficiency and the threat of privatization, the County needed a single, accurate, real‑time fleet management platform to control vehicle and parts inventory, billing and performance metrics.

The County implemented AssetWorks FleetFocus™ (and later FuelFocus™) on a hosted ASP platform to consolidate all vehicle, maintenance and fuel data into one system of record. The solution delivered real‑time reporting, preventive‑maintenance tracking, inventory control and EPA‑compliant fuel reporting, enabling a successful managed‑competition bid, a customer charge‑back system, a 25% staffing reduction, facility consolidations and documented millions in cost avoidance and savings.
