GPS Data Points the Way to a Projected Savings of $1.2M Annually

The City of Columbus, a 6,400-vehicle municipal fleet and recognized industry leader, implemented AssetWORKS GPS (powered by Verizon Networkfleet) on roughly 2,500 vehicles to better monitor operations. Telematics revealed high idling rates—about 50% of ‘key-on’ time for patrol cars and 64% for ambulances—creating a clear need to reduce fuel waste and improve driver behavior and efficiency.

Using exception reporting and vehicle diagnostics, fleet staff identified idling as a major cost driver and piloted the GRIP anti-idling system, which cut idling by 34%. At a cost of $3,000 per cruiser, the technology is projected to save about $3,500 per vehicle in the first year and approximately $1.2 million annually after equipping 339 cruisers, while also improving safety and overall fleet efficiency.
