Swedish Match, a Stockholm-based consumer products company, needed to use technology to accelerate growth amid rising competition and thinner margins. New IT leadership set out to move from regional outsourcing to a centralized shared-services model, but lacked reliable cost transparency—relying on fragile spreadsheets and facing long lead times for answers while only 5% of IT spend was discretionary.
Using Technology Business Management (TBM) principles, Group IT built a consumption-based funding model, service-focused portfolio, time-tracking and cost-pricing tools, and implemented Apptio to automate reporting and governance. The changes shifted conversations to service outputs, cut run costs by one-third, increased discretionary funding twentyfold (enabling new innovation, including a patent), and delivered faster, more trusted decision-making.
