Saving $330 million at HP Enterprise

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) faced a major challenge: IT was seen as an opaque “tax” on the business with little visibility into who consumed services or what those dollars delivered. Ahead of the 2015 split from HP Inc., HPE needed complete cost transparency and to shift spending from running the business to funding transformation initiatives.

Using Technology Business Management (TBM) with Apptio, HPE built an automated single source of truth that mapped 100% of IT financial data to services, towers and users, introduced personalized IT consumption reporting, and aligned Finance and IT. The effort is on track to save $330 million over three years—by cutting applications from 3,300 to 325, decommissioning 10,000+ servers, closing two data centers, repurposing 40% of unused storage (saving $33M), and redirecting $40M into cloud transformation.
