Case Study: Exelon achieves over $150M in run-rate IT savings and cost transparency with Apptio

A Apptio Case Study

Preview of the Exelon Case Study

How the largest energy provider in the US delivers run-rate savings via IT optimization

Exelon, a Fortune 100 energy company serving about 10 million customers with $31.4B in revenue, faced a sprawling, post-merger IT estate that lacked cost transparency and consistent management. Rapid growth and acquisitions left IT assets, applications, contractors and cloud spend fragmented, making it hard to plan, charge back costs, and realize expected synergies.

By adopting TBM principles and deploying Apptio (Cost Transparency and IT Planning) to link financials, applications and infrastructure, Exelon built a bill‑back model, rationalized contractors, and automated cloud billing. The work enabled a shared‑services IT reorg, mapped 98% of servers and 90% of storage to applications, and delivered more than $150M in run‑rate savings by 2018 (including $100M O&M reduction and $50M project rationalization), with additional contractor and multi‑year O&M savings underway.
