A Apptio Case Study
The Clorox Company, a $5.7B consumer-products firm with heavily outsourced IT, was hampered by fragmented, spreadsheet-driven planning and a “black box” budget process that produced wildly inconsistent forecasts (often off by as much as 50%), padded contingencies, and last-minute spend decisions that undermined predictability and innovation.
By adopting the TBM methodology and a cloud-based IT planning system, instituting quarterly Budget Day reviews, and applying line-item transparency and a standard ATUM taxonomy, Clorox doubled down on financial discipline and collaboration. The results: forecast accuracy rose to 97% for multiple quarters, they saved 7% on a major outsourcing contract, avoided a 6% budget cut and recaptured $3M, freed roughly 80 man-hours per quarter (and ~400 hours annually), and redirected unspent funds into innovation through a centralized contingency.
