Liftoff, a mobile-first app marketing platform and DSP, needed more mobile data and greater inventory scale to apply machine learning effectively and optimize app install and retargeting campaigns. When it first bought inventory from AppNexus, a whitelisted-app approach limited the volume of impressions, which constrained Liftoff’s ability to scale performance for its clients.
AppNexus worked with Liftoff to shift from a whitelist to a blacklist model, opening access to inventory across the network while excluding only a small number of sources. With AppNexus monitoring performance and advising on optimization, Liftoff saw a 3–4x increase in conversions from AppNexus inventory, a 27% decline in CPIs since July 2016, and installs grow from under 5,000 per month to 45,000–50,000 per month within six months.
