Swisscom Changing Business DNA Through Digital Transformation

Swisscom, Switzerland's largest telecommunications provider, faced the challenge of remaining competitive in a rapidly digitalizing market. With declining revenues in traditional areas like voice and messaging, the company needed to change its DNA to become an agile, digital enabler. They recognized that a powerful API program was crucial to empower developers and leverage new business streams. To address this, Swisscom partnered with vendor Apigee for its digital platform and API expertise.

By implementing the Apigee platform, Swisscom launched its API program, developing and exposing core APIs like SendSMS and payment services. They also created internal development units like the API-Factory and the GREENFIELD platform on Apigee to combine agility with standard processes. This solution enabled Swisscom to begin opening up its 120 internal APIs to external partners, setting the foundation to compete as a partner platform and evolve its business model, thus securing its market leadership through digital transformation.
