Vodafone - Customer Case Study

Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), which operates the Vodafone and 3 mobile brands and serves over 6 million customers, runs the Cricket Live app and Vodafone Viewer’s Verdict to stream live cricket and enable real-time fan interaction. The company faced large, seasonal traffic spikes during the cricket season (700,000 downloads in 2011/12) and needed to meet peak demand without investing in infrastructure that would sit idle off-season.

VHA moved its web tier to AWS using Amazon EC2 in Auto Scaling groups with Elastic Load Balancing, CloudWatch-driven scaling, and Amazon RDS Multi‑AZ, integrated with a third‑party CDN for live scores and voting. The deployment scaled from three to nine instances automatically, increased capacity from 3,000 to 10,000 simultaneous streams, handled 1,000 live‑score requests per second, streamed 24 TB in a month, and delivered cost‑effective, on‑demand capacity that enabled the service to be offered to all mobile users.
