Boy Scouts Aims to Boost Participation and Community-Building with Web Refresh

The Greater St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which serves about 56,000 youth across 37 counties and relies on 15,000 volunteers, was held back by a dated 2003 “Web 1.0” site. Poor navigation, limited search and publishing capabilities, and high annual maintenance costs ($60–80K) created a content bottleneck and prevented the Council from using social features to engage youth, parents, volunteers, and donors.

Partnering with Aspect, the Council rebuilt its site on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 to add blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, interactive maps and a collaborative calendar, and to extend publishing rights to volunteers. The redesign improved findability and engagement, empowered volunteers to share timely content, supported recruitment and program promotion, and is projected to save about $45,000 a year in hosting and maintenance.
