Lenovo Analyzes Petabytes of Smartphone Data from Multiple Locations and Eliminates ETL with Alluxio

Lenovo, the world’s largest personal computer vendor and a major smartphone maker, needed a way to analyze petabytes of smartphone data stored across multiple data centers worldwide. Its existing ETL process for moving data into a single location was slow, error-prone, expensive, and complicated by bandwidth limits, duplicated storage costs, and regional data regulations. Lenovo used technologies including Spark SQL, Hive, and HDFS.

With Alluxio as the data management layer, Lenovo connected distributed HDFS stores through a global namespace and enabled transparent cross-data-center access without changing applications or existing infrastructure. Alluxio improved performance by keeping data in memory and eliminated ETL and data duplication, resulting in 4x faster model processing, 10x faster data load times, and a 95% reduction in cloud compute costs, while maintaining secure and compliant data access.
