Tokopedia, the Indonesian technology company behind the country’s leading marketplace platform, ran a cloud-native, microservices-based environment across BizNet Jakarta, Alibaba Cloud Singapore, and AWS Singapore. The setup reflected a tradeoff between public cloud benefits and the needs of latency, regulation, and compliance, while also creating higher operational complexity. Tokopedia wanted to consolidate its infrastructure with a public cloud provider that had a local presence in Jakarta.

Alibaba Cloud worked with Tokopedia on the migration and networking design, including an international private leased line and IPsec VPN to support the move, along with migration tools such as Database Transmission Service, P2V/V2V, and OSS Import. Tokopedia now runs 20+ full-stack core applications on Alibaba Cloud with close to 1000 VMs and managed services, and it is using Alibaba Cloud’s big data and AI capabilities, including image search, to support faster insights and a better user experience.
